Designed for purity

The SmoothLAN integrates seamlessly between your home network and music streamer with one clear purpose: to remove crosstalk and interference — eliminating potential sources of parasitic noise that can mask musical detail. It doesn’t fundamentally change your system’s sound; it simply reveals more of what it’s already capable of.

Counteracting noise and preserving the precise timing of digital signal transmission are essential steps in allowing your Hi-Fi to perform at its full potential.

How it works

No matter how well-designed a circuit is, it will always inherently emit noise. When multiple circuits sit close together, that noise can bleed between sections – raising the noise floor and blurring signal precision. Just like placing a mobile phone too close to a speaker can cause buzzing, circuits inside a Hi-Fi system can interfere with each other when not properly isolated.

The SmoothLAN addresses this by locally isolating the network input into your system. It uses six fully independent isolation circuits, each enclosed in its own precision-machined aluminium pocket. This physical separation drains unwanted energy and blocks both external and internal interference – ensuring a cleaner, more stable signal reaches your music streamer.

More than just a filter

The SmoothLAN isn’t just a network filter – it’s a purpose built, multi-stage isolation system where every detail has been considered to preserve signal purity.

  • Precision machined aluminium case: Each Isolation circuit sits in its own fully shielded pocket, physically seperating circuits and blocking external interference.
  • EMI absorbing materials: Lining the pockets to capture and dissipate stray energy and reflections that can cloud performance.
  • Sealed construction: Twenty precision screws ensure no gaps, preventing resonances or leakage paths that could compromise Isolation.
  • Optimised PCB layout: Discrete components and carefully router high-speed traces minmise crosstalk, supported by grounded copper planes surrounding each circuit.
  • Galvanic isolation: Breaks ground loops and blocks unwanted current flow between connected devices.
The result is a meticulously shielded and optimised design that doesn’t just filter noise – it removes, contains, and drains at every stage, leaving your music streamer with the cleanest signal possible.

Where is the best place to put the SmoothLAN in my system?

We recommend placing the SmoothLAN Filter directly between your network and music streamer — this position delivers the greatest benefit in most systems.

What's the difference between the SmoothLAN Filter (passive) and the SmoothLAN Regenerator (active)?

The SmoothLAN Filter is a purely passive device — it removes high-frequency noise and interference at the network input without using any external power. It contains six independent isolation stages and is designed to eliminate as much noise as possible at the point of entry, allowing your streamer to perform with greater clarity and stability.

The SmoothLAN Regenerator, on the other hand, is an active design. It doesn’t just filter — it rebuilds the network signal entirely. By re-clocking and regenerating the data stream using a high-precision master clock and ultra-low-noise power supply, it delivers a cleaner, more stable signal to your streamer. This reduces phase noise and jitter at a deeper level, allowing digital systems to perform with greater timing accuracy and detail retrieval.

Can I use the SmoothLAN Filter and Regenerator together?

Yes, although it is system subjective, the two products can complement each other. Place the Filter first (closest to the network switch/router) and the Regenerator directly before your music streamer. This combination provides maximum noise isolation and timing accuracy.

Why does the SmoothLAN use an aluminium case?

Some Ethernet filters use plastic to prevent case interaction with internal magnetic fields, but this leaves the device susceptible to external interference, which is likely even stronger. In contrast, our aluminium case, coupled with a compartmentalized design and EMI absorbing material, provides superior shielding not just from external electromagnetic interference but also isolates internal magnetic fields from each other.

Is the SmoothLAN filter directional?

No. The SmoothLAN can be used in either direction as Ethernet by its nature is a two-way signal.

How do I install a SmoothLAN Ethernet Filter?

  1. Power down the device that will be connected to the network via the filter.
  2. Unplug the Ethernet cable from your device’s network port.
  3. Insert the unplugged Ethernet cable into one of the ports on the SmoothLAN Network Filter.
  4. Take the additional Ethernet cable provided with the filter and connect one end to the second port on the filter.
  5. Connect the other end of the additional cable back into the network port of your streaming device.
  6. Power up your device, and it should now be properly connected through the SmoothLAN Network Filter.

Why 100mbps?

Limiting the SmoothLAN to 100mbps prioritizes signal purity and noise reduction over raw data speed. High-resolution music streaming, even at the most demand levels, typically requires far less bandwidth than 100mbps. The SmoothLAN is designed to enhance music replay and by capping the speed, the device can focus on noise isolation, jitter reduction, and EMI/RF interference mitigation for streamed music signals.

Will the SmoothLAN slow down my network?

The SmoothLAN limits the connection to 100Mbps by design. This has no impact on music streaming performance (even high-resolution services use a fraction of that bandwidth) and actually helps reduce high-frequency noise. Slowing the connection is part of how the SmoothLAN improves sound quality.

Does the SmoothLAN need an external power supply?

No. The SmoothLAN is entirely passive and doesn’t require any power, making it simple to install and maintenance-free.

Will the SmoothLAN improve sound quality or just reduce noise?

Reducing network-borne noise allows your streamer and DAC to work in the best possible conditions, revealing more of the music detail already in the recording. The SmoothLAN doesn’t “change” the sound; it removes unwanted interference so your Hi-Fi can perform at its full potential.

Can I chain more than one SmoothLAN Filter in my system?

While chaining two filters is possible, it can lead to over filtering – which may subtly dampen dynamics in some systems.. If you’re looking to take things further, pairing the Filter with the Regenerator could be a superior next step.
