Why VTA Matters: Getting the Stylus-Groove Relationship Just right

What is VTA (Vertical Tracking Angle)?

Vertical Tracking Angle (VTA) is the angle the cartridge’s cantilever makes with the record surface, set by the height of the tonearm at its pivot. Records are cut with the cutting stylus at a defined angle, around 20 degrees on modern lathes, and cartridges are built to match it, typically somewhere in the 15 to 20 degree range. Set the arm at the right height and the stylus traces the groove the way it was cut. Set it wrong and it doesn’t.

VTA vs SRA: what you’re actually adjusting

Two terms get used interchangeably and shouldn’t be.

VTA is the cantilever’s angle to the record. It’s what changes when you raise or lower the arm.

SRA (Stylus Rake Angle) is the angle of the stylus contact edge in the groove. This is the one that matters. The groove was cut by a stylus raked at approximately 92 degrees, and playback is most accurate when your stylus sits at the same rake. You can’t adjust SRA directly; you adjust VTA (arm height), and SRA follows.

For most setups the practical method is simple: start with the tonearm parallel to the record surface while playing, then adjust by ear from there. This applies to every deck in this guide. Enthusiasts chasing the last fraction now measure SRA directly with a USB microscope against the record surface, which removes the guesswork but is well beyond what most listeners need. Parallel arm, small changes, careful listening gets you almost all the way.

One more variable worth knowing: SRA changes slightly with tracking force, because higher downforce flexes the cantilever. Another reason to re-check tracking force after any height change.

What happens when VTA is off?

Arm too high at the pivot (tail up): the stylus rakes forward. The usual result is a brighter, edgier balance with emphasised highs and thinner bass.

Arm too low (tail down): the rake shifts back. The usual result is a warmer, softer balance with rounded treble and less clarity.

In both cases the stylus contact with the groove wall is compromised. Beyond tonal balance, that means less precise tracking, measurably higher distortion at the extremes, and over time accelerated wear on both stylus and records.

How to hear when it’s right

Adjusting VTA is a listening exercise, so it helps to know what you’re listening for. Use one familiar record, ideally something with acoustic instruments, a well-recorded voice, and real bass.

  • Too high: sibilance on vocals, cymbals splashy rather than metallic, bass light and dry.
  • Too low: the same record sounds thick and polite, with bloated bass, shut-in treble and smoothed-over detail.
  • Right: voices sit at a natural height between the speakers, bass has both weight and definition, and sibilants sound like consonants rather than events.

Work in small steps; half a millimetre of arm height is audible on many setups. Change one thing, play the same track, decide, repeat. Stop when it sounds balanced rather than impressive. “Impressive” usually means too bright.

If you fine-tune per record, thicker 180g pressings raise the effective record surface and thinner 120g pressings lower it. Decks with on-the-fly adjustment make this practical; for everyone else, set VTA for the records you play most and leave it alone.


General Safety precautions before making adjustments

Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines where they exist. VTA adjustment means loosening parts of the tonearm, so a few habits prevent expensive accidents:

Lock the adjustment if your arm has a lock (Technics, for example). An unlocked VTA ring drifts.

Power off and unplug the turntable. Prevents accidental platter movement with the stylus exposed.

Fit the stylus guard, or remove the stylus. A bumped cantilever is the most common casualty of tonearm work. Many moving magnet styli unclip; moving coil styli don’t, so the guard is the only protection. In practice the guard is the safest option for both.

Use the right tools. Hex keys, screwdrivers, spacers: check what your arm needs before you loosen anything.

Handle the arm by its base and pillar, not the armtube. Bearings don’t take side-loads well.

Make small adjustments and test. Half-millimetre steps, then listen.

Re-check tracking force and azimuth afterwards. Height changes shift both.


Brand-Specific VTA Adjustments

LINN LP12

Linn tonearms (Ekos, Akito, Ittok) have no built-in VTA adjustment. Height is set at the arm mounting.

How to adjust:

1. Loosen the tonearm collar screw on the base of the armboard.
2. Raise or lower the tonearm slightly while ensuring it remains level.
3. Retighten the collar screw carefully without overtightening.
4. Check the VTA by playing a record and listening for clarity and balance.

Additional tips:

Aftermarket VTA adjusters exist for Linn arms if you want repeatable fine-tuning. Be careful around the armboard screws, as overtightening affects the LP12’s suspension, and on a sprung deck the suspension setup matters more than the last degree of VTA.


REGA (Planar 1, 2, 3, 6, 8, 10 with RB Tonearms)

Rega arms have no height adjustment by design, and Rega are open about why: the company has long argued that VTA adjustment is unnecessary. Their position is that record thickness varies more from pressing to pressing than any adjustment can chase, and that the rigidity lost by adding an adjustment mechanism costs more sound quality than perfect VTA could ever return. Rega’s spacers exist to restore correct geometry when fitting taller non-Rega cartridges, not as a tuning device.

Plenty of listeners disagree with Rega, and plenty agree. Either way, if you’re fitting a cartridge with a different body height, the spacer route below restores the intended geometry.

How to adjust:

1. Remove the tonearm mounting hardware (three-point or single-nut fixing depending on arm).
2. Fit spacers under the arm base. Rega’s own spacers come in 2mm and 4mm; third-party shims are available in finer increments down to 0.25mm.
3. Refit the arm securely with no play.
4. Re-check tracking force, as raising the arm alters it slightly.

Additional Tips:

Taller cartridge bodies (Ortofon 2M series, Audio-Technica VM series) typically need the 2mm spacer as a starting point. Keep changes modest; RB arms aren’t designed for large height excursions.


Technics (SL-1200/1210 Series & Similar Models)

The easiest decks in this guide, thanks to the built-in height adjustment ring.

How to adjust:

1. Turn the locking lever to Unlock.
2. Rotate the VTA ring to raise or lower the arm. The scale reads in 0.5mm steps.
3. Lock the ring.
4. Play a record and assess.

Additional tips:

Start from arm-parallel and note the ring reading, so you can always return to baseline. Re-check after mat or cartridge changes, and always re-lock: an unlocked ring works loose with use.


VPI (Prime, Scout, Classic, Avenger, HW Series)

Most VPI arms (JMW-9, JMW-10, JMW-12) carry a dedicated VTA tower. Some entry models (Cliffwood) are fixed.

How to adjust:

1. Loosen the locking screw on the VTA tower, if fitted.
2. Turn the adjustment dial in small increments.
3. Lock and listen.

Additional tips:

VPI towers allow on-the-fly adjustment, so you can tune while a record plays. It’s one of the few designs where per-pressing tweaking is genuinely convenient. Unipivot arms also make azimuth easy to disturb; re-check it after height changes.


SME (Model 309, IV, V, Series M2, Synergy)

Precisely machined height adjustment, but tool-based rather than dial-based on most models.

How to adjust:

1. Loosen the arm pillar clamp with the supplied hex key.
2. Raise or lower the arm carefully, supporting the arm while the clamp is loose.
3. Retighten securely.
4. Re-check azimuth and tracking force.

Additional tips:

Micrometer-style third-party VTA adjusters are popular with SME owners for repeatability. Don’t overtighten the clamps; the tolerances are fine and the parts deserve matching restraint.


Clearaudio (Concept, Performance, Innovation, Ovation)

Entry models (Concept, Performance DC) have limited height adjustment; higher models (Innovation, Ovation) adjust easily at the arm base.

How to adjust:

1. Loosen the locking screw at the arm mount, where fitted.
2. Set the height.
3. Retighten carefully.

Additional tips:

Clearaudio recommends arm-parallel as the starting point. Note that Clearaudio’s linear-tracking arms (such as the TT series) still have a rake angle: linear tracking eliminates horizontal tracking error, not VTA/SRA. Height on those arms is set per Clearaudio’s own procedure, so follow the manual rather than improvising.


Pro-Ject (Debut Pro, X1, RPM 5 Carbon, etc.)

Most Pro-Ject decks have no on-the-fly adjustment; height is set at the arm base collar.

  1. Locate the collar where the arm pillar meets the plinth.
  2. Loosen the grub screws with the correct hex key. The wrong size strips them.
  3. Raise or lower the pillar to the desired height, keeping the arm parallel to the record in play.
  4. Retighten evenly, then re-check tracking force and azimuth.

Additional tips:

Pro-Ject’s carbon arms show small VTA changes clearly. If your model resists adjustment, mat thickness is the practical alternative route; see the mats section below.


Michell (Gyrodec, TecnoDec, etc.)

Michell decks with Rega-based arms or the TecnoArm use spacers, like any Rega-mount arm.

  1. Loosen the arm mounting nut beneath the armboard.
  2. Add or remove spacers under the arm base. 0.5mm or 1mm steps work well.
  3. Refit, and confirm the arm sits parallel during play.

Additional tips:

Cartridge swaps are the usual reason Michell owners revisit VTA, since different body heights need different spacer stacks. Raising the arm shifts the balance brighter; lowering it warmer.


Thorens (TD 1600, TD 124, TD 309, etc.)

Most modern Thorens turntables have adjustable tonearm height, but vintage models may require spacers. Some Thorens arms use collar-style clamps to control VTA.

How to adjust:

1. Loosen the set screw or collar at the tonearm base.
2. Manually adjust the height of the tonearm.
3. Secure the tonearm in place once the desired angle is achieved.

Additional tips:

Vintage models (TD 124, TD 125) may need custom shims for precision. On sprung Thorens decks, as with the LP12, keep an eye on suspension behaviour when changing masses or heights at the arm.


Acoustic Signature (Wow, Double X, Ascona, Invictus)

Precision-machined adjustable arm bases across most of the range; many use threaded VTA adjusters.

How to adjust:

1. Loosen the securing screw on the tonearm mount.
2. Turn the fine adjustment dial where fitted.
3. Re-tighten the screw and test playback.

Additional tips:

The higher models adjust to micrometer-level precision. If you fit a third-party arm, check whether a different mounting base is required before assuming the adjuster carries over.


Kuzma (Stabi S, Stabi R, Stabi XL, 4Point tonearm)

Fully adjustable via threaded base systems; the 4Point arm adjusts on the fly.

How to Adjust:

1. Turn the VTA adjustment dial, or loosen the arm collar on simpler mounts.
2. Set the height.
3. Lock it in place.

Additional notes:

The 4Point’s VTA tower is among the most precise in production. If you own one, per-pressing adjustment is realistic rather than theoretical.


Garrard & Vintage Idler-Drive turntables

No built-in adjustment: VTA is a function of plinth and arm mounting height, usually with separately sourced arms.

How to adjust:

1. Use spacers or shims at the arm base.
2. Aftermarket arm bases with adjustable pillars (SME or the now-discontinued Jelco pattern, available used) give proper height control.
3. Confirm cartridge alignment before finalising.

Tips: High-mass vintage arms respond to height changes differently from modern low-mass designs, so go slowly. If you modify plinth height, leave slack in the arm wiring.


Audio-Technica (AT-LP120X, AT-LP140XP, AT-LP5X)

Huge sellers, no arm height adjustment. The arms are fixed at a height chosen for Audio-Technica’s own cartridges.

How to adjust:

  1. There’s no adjuster, so work at the other end of the equation: headshell shims between cartridge and headshell lower the effective angle; a thinner or thicker platter mat raises or lowers the record surface.
  2. After any shim or mat change, re-check tracking force.

Tips: With the stock cartridge at stock height these decks are set up correctly out of the box; VTA work is usually only worthwhile after a cartridge upgrade with a different body height.


Denon (DP-300F, DP-450USB, DP-3000NE)

Most current Denon decks have fixed arm height; the flagship DP-3000NE includes a height-adjustable arm base with a locking mechanism. Check your model’s manual.

How to adjust (fixed models):

  1. Use headshell shims or mat thickness, as with Audio-Technica above.

How to adjust (DP-3000NE):

  1. Unlock the arm height mechanism per the manual, set, and re-lock.

Tips: The removable-headshell Denons make shim experiments quick. You can prepare two headshells at different effective heights and swap between them.


Fluance (RT81, RT82 to RT85)

Fixed arm height across the range.

How to adjust:

  1. Mat thickness and headshell shims are the available routes, as above.
  2. Re-check tracking force after changes.

Tips: Fluance ships different platter materials across the range (rubber mat on some models, acrylic platters without mats on others). If you’re swapping between them, remember the record surface height changes with the platter top, not just the mat.


U-Turn (Orbit series)

No built-in VTA adjustment. The arm is set for U-Turn’s supported cartridges.

How to adjust:

  1. Mat swaps (cork vs felt vs rubber differ in thickness) and headshell-end shims are the practical options.

Tips: U-Turn’s supported cartridge list exists partly because of this fixed geometry. Stray far from it and you’re relying on shims to restore the intended angle.


Vertere (DG-1, DG-1 S)

The Groove Runner arm mounts on a pillar; height is set at the mounting per Vertere’s setup procedure.

How to adjust:

  1. Follow Vertere’s setup guide for your model. The arm mounting differs from conventional collar designs, and the factory documentation is unusually good.
  2. Set for arm-parallel with your cartridge of choice, then fine-tune by ear.

Tips: Vertere supplies detailed setup material with the deck and online; use it in preference to generic instructions, including these.


Origin Live (Silver, Zephyr, Encounter and others)

Origin Live arms mount on a single threaded pillar with a locking arrangement, and the company offers fine VTA adjusters for several models.

How to adjust:

  1. Loosen the pillar lock beneath the armboard.
  2. Set height (or turn the VTA adjuster where fitted).
  3. Re-lock.

Tips: Origin Live publishes its own setup guidance and considers modest VTA error less audible than poor arm rigidity. Their documentation is worth reading even if you disagree by the end of it.


AVID (Diva, Volvere, Sequel, Acutus)

AVID decks take third-party arms (SME, Rega-pattern and others), so VTA adjustment is a property of the arm you’ve fitted, not the deck.

How to adjust:

  1. Find your arm in the sections above (SME and Rega cover most AVID installations) and follow that procedure.

Tips: AVID’s sprung subchassis behaves like any suspended design: after changing arm hardware or mass, confirm the suspension still sits level and free.


MoFi Electronics (StudioDeck, UltraDeck)

Both decks use MoFi’s gimbaled arm with height adjustment at the arm base collar.

How to adjust:

  1. Loosen the set screws at the arm base with the supplied hex key.
  2. Raise or lower the arm pillar, supporting the arm while loose.
  3. Retighten and re-check tracking force.

Tips: MoFi’s manuals document the procedure and the intended baseline for their own cartridges; start there before adjusting by ear.


Platter mats and VTA

Any mat change is a VTA change. A mat’s thickness raises the record surface by the same amount, which is equivalent to lowering the arm. Swap a 1mm felt mat for a 3mm mat and you’ve shifted effective VTA as surely as if you’d moved the pillar.

Two practical consequences. First, if your deck has height adjustment, re-check VTA after any mat change and compensate. Second, if your deck is one of the fixed-arm models above, mat thickness is your VTA adjuster: choosing between mats of different thicknesses is the accessible way to move the angle in either direction.

Frequently asked questions

Should the tonearm be parallel to the record? Parallel during play is the correct starting point, not a law. Cartridge designs vary, so the optimum is often slightly off-parallel. Start level, then trust small adjustments and your ears.

How do I know if my VTA is off? Persistent brightness or sibilance suggests the arm is too high; a thick, dull balance suggests too low. If the same character follows across many records, it’s setup rather than pressings.

Does changing cartridge mean re-setting VTA? Usually, yes. Cartridge body heights differ by millimetres, which is a large VTA change. Re-set to arm-parallel with the new cartridge and fine-tune from there.

Do linear-tracking arms need VTA adjustment? Yes. Linear (tangential) tracking removes horizontal tracking error; the vertical rake of the stylus is a separate matter and applies to every arm type.

Is VTA or tracking force more important? Set tracking force first, to the cartridge maker’s specification, as it affects both tracking security and effective SRA. Then set VTA. Re-check force after any height change.


Final thoughts

Small, incremental adjustments and careful listening are the whole method. Start parallel, move in half-millimetre steps, re-check tracking force, and stop when the balance is right on records you know well.
